Taking Pictures During the Holiday Season
Taking photos is a great way for families to remember the memories made during Christmas. The question is – how do you capture the season? Most often than not, we all get too busy entertaining guests or cleaning up the mess afterwards to truly appreciate the beauty of the love shared between people during the holidays. Take time to capture these in photos. You do not have to be a professional photographer to be able to take good pictures.
1. You just have to make sure your camera is accessible at all times so you can snap pictures when you see things as they happen. You can choose to have it in auto-mode or if you have time, you can play with its settings before the merrymaking. Digital point and shoot cameras have extra settings most people do not even discover and try to learn.
2. When taking pictures, try to capture it at all angles. Portraits of kids are best shot from their level and Christmas decorations are beautiful when they are taken in close-up view. As a general rule, a view will look better if it is framed in some way perhaps by a tree or a fence line, wall or person on one side or both. Try and imagine your picture as a print or on your screen and what would look good in or out of your shot.
3. Natural light is best. If you are shooting outdoors, make sure your subjects don’t have their backs against where the light is coming from so their faces won’t be in shadows. When indoors, utilize your camera’s flash to help with the lighting.
4. Take pictures of relationships and candid moments. Not every picture needs to be a posed shot. You can take a picture of a kiss under the mistletoe, the sheer joy on your kid’s face when opening his present or even photograph a tender moment between two people holding hands or embracing.
5. If you are the designated photographer, remember to take pictures with you on it! It might be advisable to have a tripod and remote to ensure this or you can simply hand the camera over to a relative or family member so you can be in the photos too.
When people are prompted to smile for every picture, then they all begin to resemble snapshots. Although posed pictures are great, telling the story of the moment means capturing the moment like a documentarian. Do not be afraid of blurry shots because when you look at them with the big picture, your photos will create memories and tell a story. And that is what capturing the season is all about.
If you are frustrated with how your photos look or disappointed or you didn’t take more pictures, relax. What is more important is that you have experienced the moment and made memories that you will treasure for a lifetime.
